The "Permitted Dialing Period" begins on April 24, 2021, when callers with a given area code can complete calls by dialing seven digits.

"Many systems default to 10-digit dialing, but some older equipment still uses seven digits," the PUC said. "Please contact your doctor or security provider if you are unsure whether your device needs to be reprogrammed for the upcoming change to 10-digit local dialing."
The PUC said that any necessary reprogramming of alarms and home security devices should be done during the dial-in permit period from April 24, 2021 to October 24, 2021, to avoid disruption of those services.
Customers should also be sure to include the area code anywhere the phone number appears, such as on their websites, personal and business stationery, promotional materials, personal and business checks, and even personal or pet ID tags.
Beginning July 16, 2022, dialing "988" will direct calls to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Customers must still dial 1-800-273-8255 (TALK) to reach Lifeline as of July 16, 2022.
