FORT STEWART, Ga. - Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, the Winn Community Hospital Laboratory has developed services to protect the military and community members by helping to establish COVID-19 testing and testing facilities, fever clinics, and by training and providing new testing equipment.

Lieutenant Colonel Roger Hosier, in charge of the Winn ACH laboratory said, in general, their job is to support the US Department of Medicine - Fort Stewart-Hunter Airfield health care network by providing timely and accurate results and optimizing the use of available resources. Their core services include clinical chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology, transfusion services and urinalysis.

But, that mission has changed with COVID-19, Hosier said. In the past two months, the rhythm of their fight has been adjusted to help provide screening and testing for the coronavirus.
"At the start of the pandemic, the lab didn't have the ability to do on-site testing," Hosier said. "All symptomatic patient test requests must go to a Georgia Public Health laboratory for testing and they are strictly limited in the number of tests per day that can be performed."
As the pandemic progressed, the Defense Health Agency recognized the need for Winn ACH to have on-site testing capabilities, delivery of testing equipment, along with educational materials and information.
Winn ACH has access to the BioFire FilmArray analyzer and is able to test up to 48 samples per day. Within weeks, Winn received another machine called the GeneXpert, which expanded the on-site testing to more than 400 a day.

First Lieutenant Brandy Warner, the lab's deputy director, said the new capability helped average turnaround times to eight hours or less.
"The COVID sample was received and recorded by our shipping department," said Warner. "Once we have the charge, the samples are then taken to our microbiology department to be tested. Once loaded, the test took about 45 minutes.
"I'm very proud of everyone in this lab," Benson said. "Everyone, civilian and military, has given time and effort to face the challenges presented to us.
