Fort Lee Passport Office - FORT LEE — A new ADA-compliant post office — part of a $30 million downtown revitalization project — is complete and set to open next month.
The post office is in a new building which is also home to the Parking Authority and the office of the Board of Education.

The new building is 100 yards from the original building at 229 Main St. It will provide a complete passport center. No one at the current post office returned several calls Tuesday.

The original post office was built in 1938 under President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal recovery program, which created public works and also employed artists, writers and actors. Historic murals produced under the scheme still adorn post offices across the country.
Last year, the Fort Lee Post Office was named to Preservation New Jersey's annual list of 10 endangered historic sites in the state.
The four murals in question were painted by Henry Schnakenberg and depict the history of Fort Lee, including Native Americans, a Revolutionary War photo, a movie set and a family picnicking in a park with the George Washington Bridge in the background.

The city has committed to spending $180,000 to preserve and relocate the murals, a condition required by the post office, Sokolich said.
As soon as the post office has officially moved into the new location, the murals will be removed.
The original building will then be demolished and the property used for a 'passive' park which will include a walkway and benches. The old parking garage will be renovated for an hourly space for large companies.
The new post office is next to a parking garage that opened in 2019. The garage is owned by the local authority's parking authority and has 357 indoor spaces reserved for monthly license holders and 268 outdoor spaces.
