Guns are reactive instruments. They are brought to man to respond to a threat. They can stay at home ready to deal with a threat at home. If we notice, it is usually recommended to deploy a rifle or shotgun.
The pistol is the weapon of opportunity. While guns are not the most powerful weapons, they are the ones we are most likely to have on hand when we need a gun to save our lives. I have been reviewing the Taurus Judge for several months and have developed a favorable opinion of the revolver that the specialist uses.
The Judge is a 5-shot revolver that holds both a .410 shotgun barrel and a Colt .45 cartridge. This means true versatility. Similarly, the design limits the revolver's accuracy and range. As a pure, short-range local defense, the Taurus Judge has merit.
The Taurus Judge Could Be An Intruder's Worst Nightmare
There's a big argument that getting on target quickly and getting a hit, any hit, very quickly is critical. That's true. I taught that it's better to slow down and get a center hit than a quick miss. This does not mean that a quick strike is not possible; it just takes practice.
Judge addresses this need by offering a shot payload. The .410 caliber isn't a powerhouse, but with the right load, and that's the key, it offers a viable defensive option. Surprisingly, my analysis indicates that the Taurus judge may also survive for protection against predators at close range. My test piece was probably the most common Judge (there are several options), a steel-frame revolver with a 3.0-inch barrel.
The revolver is light enough, handles better than it looks, and offers a good hit rate for practicers. Good fit, finish and smooth action. The revolver features a red fiber optic front sight. This sight provides a good point of aim and aids in rapid target acquisition.
A short barrel pistol with a smoothbore that fires a shotgun is illegal, the .410 and .45 Colt are so close that Taurus can design and manufacture a revolver chambered for the .410 shotgun cartridge and the .45 cartridge Colt. There is rifling but it is quite shallow.

Like all double-action revolvers, the Judge is easy to handle. Open the cylinder, load the chambers and pull the trigger to fire. No rack slide and no safety to operate. The concept is to allow the shooter to get a quick hit with a shot charge. Although each individual pellet does not carry a lot of energy, the impact of the charges hitting multiple projectiles at once offers great wounding potential.
You may have seen videos and advertisements where the Taurus Judge is fired at a target and the target is loaded with hits. Birdshot is a small shot mark intended to humanely kill a bird with a few hits. It is in no way useful for self-defense. Like shooting a full-sized shotgun, birdshot is fine for practice, but not for self-defense. A 7- to 9-shot pellet load carries hundreds of small pellets that form a pattern.
In a standard self-defense scope, this pattern ranges from 18 to 32 inches. It is 7 meters, passing the bird shot is useless. Worse, the small shot only penetrated a few inches. A criminal wearing a heavy winter jacket may not be injured. At about 15 feet, the Federal 4 pellet load, carrying the No. 3 pellets, maintains a coherent pattern less than three inches. This is a preferred load for those using the .410 load for self defense.
The Federal load is advertised at around 750 fps, but it actually tops out at 800 fps in the Judge. The total cargo was 292 grains. Winchester offers a PDX load with a total payload of over 300 grains, with three flat discs and a BB Shot load. With this load, the pattern is usually quite large (up to 16 inches to 15 feet) with the discs hitting the center of the target.

The Hornady .410 defense load features a .41 caliber slug followed by two round balls. The slug generally follows a straight line with crosshairs with the balls rotating in the center. It is important that the shot on a target paper determines how the shot reaches between 5 and 10 meters.
I think 7 meters is the outer range for these loads, though the Hornady slug with its FTX design might be useful beyond that. Bottom line, pellet and specialty loads are useful for home defense and close range defense against predators. Penetration tests on jugs of water and wet newspaper indicated that these charges would produce serious damage.
Bird shot can penetrate a six-inch gallon jug and some shots will reach a second jug, but very few. A 2 ½ inch Federal shell with 4 OOO balls penetrated over 24 inches, which can be attributed to 18 inches of gelatin. That's great.
The Winchester PDX load features a larger pattern. However, all three discs on the PDX deliver a 3×4 pattern at 15 feet. The larger pattern consists of 12 BBs. The Hornady FTX slug penetrates 15 inches in this revolver, where two round balls produce a total group of 3 to 5 inches at 15 feet.

These heavy loads should produce devastating results from 15 feet to perhaps 21 feet, the magical average range of 7 yards. Actually, in a room or a room is more likely. The Judge should be pointed, but the pattern is extended enough to help hit 10-15 feet. This gun is not useful beyond 21 feet with shot loads.
Another option is to load the Judge with Colt .45 ammo. To comply with federal firearms and ammunition laws, the Judge is a .45 Colt revolver with the option to fire .410 bullets. The barrel is fluted. The long jump of the Colt .45 bullet from chamber to muzzle appears to limit both velocity and accuracy. In some cases this is true. However, my latest tests indicate that this loss is not always what we think.
The Judge is very strong for the heaviest loads, including handloads of SWC ammunition. It depends on how much recoil tolerance you have. A great choice for self defense is Hornady Critical Defense. This 185 grain bullet has a good reputation for expansion and penetration. Velocity is 891 fps from the three-inch Taurus Judge barrel. The shrinkage is moderate. This charge is correct to the point of purpose. At 15 yards, five shots from a solid bench shot position produced 3-inch groups. It is very accurate for self defense.
Another option to consider is the Winchester PDX 225-grain JHP. This load packs a punch at 780 fps. This bullet weight offers a lot of help. The .45 Colt is one of the few guns that works well without bullet expansion. This has been proven in the Old West and in many interactions since then.

A solid choice is the 255-grain Winchester lead bullet. This bullet came out of the Judge at 770 fps. (And 778 fps from a hand held 4 ¾ inch revolver for comparison). Penetration is about 18 inches, great for self-defense, but recoil is light. It's also a fairly accurate load with 3-inch groups at 15 yards. If the owner judge predicts a long chance,
